1st Team win National Club Cup - 2009

December 3rd, 2009

This weekend the Hazelwood First team won the National Club Cup beating Edgbaston Priory in the final 4 -1.

This is a great achievement for what is a relatively small club in the squash world and congratulations go to:

Adrian Waller

Marc Woolhead

Keith Timms

Peter Gunter

Phil Waller

Neil Waller (played against Dulwich making a round trip from Loughborough – train on my credit card!)

The event was held at the Park Squash Club in Nottingham which is one of the few clubs still having 10 courts. On the Saturday support came from Ray and Grandad Waller with Derek Weedon attending both days. A big thanks to Derek for his support and enthusiasm and good luck this week in the 3rd team!

This event is a ‘club’ based event with winners of all leagues playing regional matches and then a national final. The above team beat St Georges and Dulwich in the Southern regional event and then Torquay, Charters and East Anglia before the final. Charters was in fact the key match with Adrian playing Jesse Englebrecht who is ranked a few places above him in the world ranking but on the way down with Adrian on the way up. Adrian won 3 – 1. The key match of this game was Peter Gunter at 4 and he came out a 3 – 1 winner despite playing with a very painful shoulder. This meant the final game of Marc V Mick Biggs was a dead rubber with Marc coming out the winner although if the match was on it you never know what might have happened.

Well down boys another historic moment in the history of Hazelwood.
